Twakutukuza Trust

Some of the most powerful stories begin in places we would never have chosen for ourselves. Twakutukuza Trust began in one of those places. It began with Doris Mayoli and a cancer diagnosis that changed the course of her life. What followed was a season marked by treatment, uncertainty, prayer, courage, and the kind of questions that arise when life suddenly looks very different from what we had imagined. Yet within that difficult season, Doris encountered God in a deeply personal way. Faith became more than something she professed; it became something she leaned on. Music became more than something she enjoyed; it became part of how she held onto hope. That gathering grew into TWA: Twakutukuza, meaning We exalt You. What began as one woman’s thanksgiving became a community. As Doris shared her journey, others began to share theirs. Stories of diagnosis, survival, loss, fear, hope, and healing found a place to be held. People who had walked the cancer journey themselves, or walked alongside someone they loved, found one another. Slowly, the song became bigger than the person who first sang it. That is the story at the heart of TWA. It is not simply a story about cancer, and it is certainly not a story defined by pain. It is a story about what can happen when pain is placed in God’s hands and allowed to become purpose. It is the story of one woman’s difficult season becoming a source of strength for many others; of gratitude becoming service; of a personal testimony becoming a place where other people could find hope. Over the years, TWA has continued to bring people together around this same conviction: that nobody should have to walk through cancer alone. The journey affects far more than the person carrying the diagnosis. It touches families, friendships, livelihoods, faith, routines, and futures. Sometimes what a person needs most is not someone with all the answers, but someone willing to walk beside them. That willingness to walk together is what has shaped TWA. People have supported the work in different ways. Some have sung. Some have prayed. Some have given financially. Some have opened doors through their influence and networks. Some have offered practical support. Some have simply shown up at the right moment and reminded another person that their story mattered. This is where the power of TWA lies: not in one person doing everything, but in many people choosing to bring what is in their hands and allowing it to become part of someone else’s healing journey. The story that began with Doris did not end with Doris. It continues every time someone chooses to hold another person’s hand. And it is still being written.
